"Attosecond coherent control of a free-electron wave function via semi-infinite light fields and plasmon polaritons"

The interaction between light and electrons can be exploited for generating
radiation, such as in synchrotrons and free electron lasers, or for controlling
electron beams in applications such as time-resolved electron microscopy for the
dynamical investigation of materials and molecules. Using suitably engineered
electromagnetic fields the coherent control of the electron wave-function can be
pushed to unexplored timescales, even below the attosecond regime down into the
zeptosecond regime, which would enable new applications in light-assisted
quantum devices and diagnostics at extremely short timescales, such as those
governing intramolecular electronic motions and nuclear processes.
In this talk, I report a new method for the coherent manipulation of relativistic freeelectron
beams with attosecond precision, by means of an appropriately
synthesized electromagnetic field generated either by a sequence of two fs laser
pulses reflected at the surface of a mirror (semi-infinite field), or by the coherent
superposition of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) optically-generated from
nanofabricated structures (near field).

"Double-slit-like quantum interference with single matter particles (electrons) was a highly sought-after result, finally carried out in 1976 and voted as the “most beautiful experiment in physics” by Physics World readers in 2002.
Here we present the first observation of a quantum wave interference with single antimatter particles, positrons, by using a period-magnifying Talbot-Lau interferometer based on material diffraction gratings."
